Recognition of prior learning, or RPL, is a way for you to gain qualifications in an industry you already have experience in. You can convert your prior experience in the military, police or emergency services into qualifications for equivalent experience in another field. For military veterans, it can help them get transition into society and use the experiences they have in the military to grow their civilian. There are instances where it involves learning and development training to achieve certain qualifications. It can help you achieve your goals and advance your career.

What is recognition of prior learning?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process that allows you to gain a qualification without having to complete the course. There will be an assessment by an Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to determine if your experience qualifies for an RPL.  If you are applying for RPL, you will need to provide evidence of your experience and how this relates to the qualification that you want.

You can apply for recognition of prior learning if:

  • You have done something similar in the military or other roles. For example, if your role was similar on a different ship, then that may be enough for recognition of prior learning.

  • You do not have enough Australian Defence Force (ADF) experience but have completed an equivalent civilian course in another country and can prove it with an official transcript from the organisation where it was undertaken as well as an official translation into English by an approved translator if required under Australian regulations.ons.

Why is recognition of prior learning important?

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is a process that allows you to gain qualifications without having to complete units of study at university. It’s a way for you to gain recognition for skills, knowledge and experience you have gained outside of formal education.

The RPL process will help you save time and money. You may be able to reduce the amount of coursework required or complete an entire qualification with less study than would otherwise be required if starting from scratch. It can help give you the confidence and motivation needed to get back to work sooner.
